Michael Reisch, PhD

Michael Reisch, PhD, is the Daniel Thursz Distinguished Professor of Social Justice at the University of Maryland.  He has held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania, San Francisco State University, and Stony Brook University, and was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley (3 times), the New Bulgarian University in Sofia, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

A former Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Fulbright Scholar, Reisch is the author or editor of over 30 books and monographs, over 160 articles and book chapters, and over 400 papers at state, national, and international conferences.  His most recent books include Social Policy and Social Justice, Social Work Practice and Social Justice: Concepts, Challenges, and Strategies, The Routledge International Handbook of Social Justice, and The Handbook of Community Practice. His work has been translated into 10 languages and he has lectured widely in Asia, Australia, Europe, and Latin America.

Reisch has held leadership positions in advocacy, professional, and social justice organizations that focused on issues of poverty and inequality, particularly as they affect low-income children and families, welfare recipients, immigrants and refugees, and unemployed or homeless persons.  He has directed or consulted on political campaigns at the federal, state, and local levels in four states and been honored for his work by the Maryland General Assembly, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the National Association of Social Workers, and several nonprofit organizations and universities.  In 2013, he was named “Social Work Educator of the Year” by the Maryland Chapter of NASW.  In 2014, he received both the “Teacher of the Year” award from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the Significant Lifetime Achievement award from the Council on Social Work Education.
