Bio

Luis H. Zayas is Professor of Social Work, Psychiatry, and Psychology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where he served as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2023 to 2026.  Previously, he was the Robert Lee Sutherland Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy and Dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin.  Zayas held faculty appointments at Washington University in St. Louis, Fordham University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Columbia University.  His leadership positions included president of the St. Louis Group for Excellence in Social Work Research and Education and the Society for Social Work and Research.  His most recent book, Through Iceboxes and Kennels: How Immigration Detention Harms Children and Families (Oxford, 2023), won the 2024 Society for Social Work and Research Book Award.
