Can Schools Prevent Student Homelessness?

May 25, 2026 — Fellow Gautam N. Yadama, PhD, Professor and Dean of the Boston College School of Social Work, co-authored a Boston Globe opinion piece with Marty Martinez, President and CEO of United Way of Massachusetts Bay, arguing that schools are uniquely positioned to identify housing instability early and connect families to support before crisis hits. The op-ed draws on findings from the Early Homelessness Intervention and Prevention program — a research-practice partnership among Boston College School of Social Work, United Way of Massachusetts Bay, FamilyAid, and Boston Public Schools — which has served more than 10,000 children and parents since 2019.

The Hidden Costs of "Shoulder-to-Shoulder" Male Friendships

May 2026 — Fellow Geoffrey L. Greif, MSW, PhD, Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, is featured in a Silicon Canals article exploring why so many men quietly end up without close friends as adult life pulls them away from shared activities. The piece draws on Greif's framework from his book Buddy System: Understanding Male Friendships — built on in-depth interviews with nearly 400 men — which maintains that men tend to build friendships "shoulder-to-shoulder" through activities, while women build them "face-to-face" through conversation. When the activity ends, the friendship often does too.

Building a Stronger Social Work Workforce in Massachusetts

May 2026 — Fellow Jorge Delva, MSW, PhD, Dean Emeritus and Professor at the Boston University School of Social Work and Co-Director of the BRIDGE Program, testified alongside Massachusetts social workers in support of the SUPER Act (S.218/H.1423), state legislation aimed at strengthening the social work workforce by removing barriers to entry — including the requirement of a multiple-choice licensure exam at the LCSW level — and incentivizing professionals in the field.
